Newton County was created in 1821 from parts of Henry, Jasper and Walton counties. It is named for Sergeant John Newton [1755-1780] a Revolutionary Way enlisted soldier whose exploits were fictionalized by author Mason Locke Weems. Newtown was the first county in the U.S. to provide free transportation to school students, proposed in 1893. [www.georgia.gov, accessed February, 2013]
