Sumter County was established in 1831 from part of Lee County. It was named for South Carolina's General Thomas Sumter. The county is perhaps best known as the home of the City of Plains, home to President Jimmy Carter; county seat, Americus, is home to Martin Fuller's Habitat for Humanity.
