Adair County administrative offices are located at 400 Public Square, Greenfield, IA 50849; phone: 641-743-2546.

Adair County [1] was organized in 1851. It was named for Kentucky Governor, John Adair, who served as a General in the War of 1812. Fontanelle (then known as Summerset) was designated county seat in 1855. Laid out in 1856, Greenfield became the county seat in 1858.
