Beginnings [1]

Captain Nathan Boone (the county's namesake) traveled through what would become Boone County while exploring the Des Moines River valley in 1835. Boone county was established in 1847 but was not organized until 1849. That same year the first school was established along with the first post office. Boonesboro (the county seat) was established in 1851. The first courthouse was completed in 1857. Boonesboro was renamed Montana in 1865, and renamed Boone in 1871.
