TOWNS

The York County Courthouse is located at 45 Kennebunk Road, Alfred ME 04002; phone: 207-324-1571.

York County was incorporated in 1636; it was the first county also incorporated after Maine achieved statehood. Prior to white settlement, Native Americans named the area "Massabesic." The local chief (named Fluellin) sold land to Major William Phipps in 1661. One historian reports that the payment included blankets, rum, powder, musket balls, and strings of beads.
