The first settler in the area is believed to have been Abraham C. Wadsworth who came with his family from Connecticut about 1846-1857.
The county was formed in 1840 and named Muguzee. The name was changed to Antrim when incorporated in 1863. At that time the former town of Muguzee had its name changed to Elk Rapids.
