In 1818 a group of entrepreneurial businessmen from Detroit and Macomb County created "The Pontiac Company" for the purpose of buying land and laying out a town. The county was organized in 1819. The Pontiac Company donated land and money to have their town, Pontiac, designated as the county seat.
