TOWNS
Established in 1784 and named for the first mayor of Wilmington (John Sampson), Sampson County has the second largest land area (945 square miles) in North Carolina. It is perhaps the largest in terms of farm income, ranking number 1 in the production of some tobacco products, sweet potatoes and peppers. Agriculture provides more than 1/3rd of the county's employment and nearly 3/4ths of its total economic output.
