Churchill County, in the west central part of Nevada, contains 5,158 square miles or 3,301,120 acres. Within this region the lower portion of the Carson River and its terminus sustained human occupation for thousands of years. Northern Paiute people and their predecessors were the first to use the region's natural resources. The riparian setting then attracted trappers, explorers, emigrants, businessmen, miners, farmers and ranchers. [†]
