Gilliam County was created from part of Wasco County on February 25, 1885 by the Oregon legislature, creating the 32nd county in the state. The county was named for Colonel Cornelius Gilliam who lead the forces of the provisional government in 1847-48 during the wars with the Cayuse Indians. Gilliam's life ended abruptly when he was accidentally shot and killed in 1848. [1]
