Beginnings [1]
In the 1750s settlers from Pennsylvania came into the Chester County area looking for good grazing land for their cattle. The counties of Chester, York, and Lancaster were named for the Pennsylvania counties from which these settlers came. By the 1780s the Chester area had grown enough to need a courthouse of its own. Before that Camden had served the district. The village of Chester grew up around the courthouse which was located on top of the town hill.
