The McMinn County Courthouse is located at 6 East Madison Avenue, Athens, TN 37303; phone: 423-745-7634.

McMinn County was created in 1819. Calhoun served as the county seat from 1820-1823 at which time it was moved to the City of Athens.

The county is named for Joseph McMinn [1758-1824] who served as Tennessee's Governor from 1815 to 1821. McMinn was born in West Marlborough Township, Chester County, PA.
