St Matthews City
| ( (
St. Matthews City Hall is located at 3940 Grandview Avenue, Louisville, KY 40257; phone: 502-638-4786. In 1779 John Floyd purchased 2,000 acres from soldiers who were granted the property for their service during the French and Indian War. Colonel Floyd, along with some family members, settled here that same year, building cabins and a stockade. This area was what would become the City of St. Matthews. In 1840 the area was known as Gilman's Point, referencing a local tavern. The St. Matthews was adopted when a post office was opened in 1851. In 1939 the WPA described St. Matthews as "a community village that is a shipping point for large quantities of Irish potatoes." During much of the first half of the 20th century St. Matthews was home to a Produce Exchange was was, at one time, the second largest potato shipper in the U.S. When Louisville and Jefferson County were merged in 2003, St. Matthews was annexed. |
