TOWNS
The gold rush of 1848 found fortune hunters doing "placer mining," the method of washing away sand and gravel leaving behind the heavier gold. Claude Chana discovered gold in the Auburn Ravine in 1848, and the area of his claim ultimately grew to serve as a shipping and supply center for other gold camps in the area. With Auburn as the county seat, Placer County was created in 1851 with land taken from Sutter and Yuba counties.
