Robeson County, the largest county in the state of North Carolina, was founded in 1787 from a part of Bladen County and named for Colonel Thomas Robeson of the Revolutionary War. Lumberton, the county seat, and only city in the county, is located approximately fifteen miles north of Fairmont. From early in its history Robeson County has been primarily an agricultural county, with its chief crops including tobacco, cotton, corn, and sweet potatoes. [1]
