The Town of Vernon was incorporated in 1808. The City (village) of Rockville was incorporated in 1889. Rockville Village was the historic county seat of Tolland County.

Rockville consolidated with the Town of Vernon in 1965.

Vernon has more than 30 miles of public trails for walking, biking, snow shoeing and cross country skiing. These include: Risley Pond Loop, Rails-to-Trails: Hop River Linear Park, Rails-to-Trails: Rockville Spur, Hochanum River Linear Park, Indian Trails, Belding Wildlife Management Area, Valley Falls, Shenipsit Trail and Walker's Reservoir.
