South Windham was described, in 1889 [1], as follows:

"South Windham is a pleasant village, with wide streets and elm-shaded walks, lighted with gas. The surrounding country is hilly, and on an eminence on the west stands a modern antique structure of respectable dimensions, just completed for a summer hotel. It overlooks the village and surroundings and is conspicuous for miles around."
