Bear was a historic crossroads village whose name is believed to have originated from the Bear Tavern which once served travelers along the road connecting Wilmington and Dover. The tavern was located in the vicinity of what is today the intersection of Routes 40 and 7.
Today, the area known as Bear is essentially a suburban bedroom community of Wilmington.
