Ellijay was designated as the county seat in 1834, two years after Gilmer County was formed from part of Cherokee County. The area that's home to Ellijay has always been that of a remote mountain community. It's isolation was not relieved until 1991 with the completion of the Zell Miller Mountain Parkway.
