Fountain County was founded in 1826, named after Major James Fontaine, who died in the Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811. The county seat, Covington, was established in 1827. The current courthouse, built in 1937, is the fourth in the county’s history, following earlier buildings from 1827, 1833, and 1859. It was designed in the Art Deco style by architect Louis Johnson and features murals by Eugene Savage depicting the county’s history. The project was funded by the Public Works Administration, costing $228,822 at the time. [ www.grok.com, accessed April, 2025 ].
