First settled prior to 1768 and named Cumberland Crossing. Incorporated as a city in 1846 and named for Isham Burk. From the late 19th century through the 1920s Burkesville was a significant shipping port. President Abraham Lincoln's father, Thomas served as Cumberland County constable from 1802 to 1804.
