Neighborhoods

First settled around 1640, the Town of Bourne was incorporated in 1884. It was originally the Village of Monument located in the Town of Sandwich. It was named for its most prominent citizen, Jonathan Bourne. The making of freight cars was an important industry here until 1928. In 1935 the Federal Government bought and dismantled the plant to make way for the enlargement of the Cape Cod Canal. Hundreds of box cars were shipped to France from here during WW I.
