Beginnings [1]

Incorporated in 1649, Yarmouth's history was typical of that of the Cape in general following the Revolutionary War. The ships of Yarmouth were at the forefront of the New England ships sent in response to opportunities presented by the Napoleonic Wars. Between 1815 and 1855 the zenith of prosperity reigned in Yarmouth, with great activity both on land and at sea. Just before the Civil War, however, the glory of the American merchant marine began to fade, the fishing business tended to become concentrated in Gloucester, Boston and Provincetown, and the Yarmouth fleet, like those of other Cape towns, gradually went out of existence.
