Great Barrington is a historic postal village located in the central part of the Town of Great Barrington, along the Housatonic River. In 1885 it was a village of about 2,700 inhabitants, whose broad main street, numberless huge elms, fine business blocks, neat and well-kept houses, and its business activity won for it the admiration of all. It had, aside from its business blocks and factories, 4 churches (Congregational, Methodist, Episcopal and Roman Catholic), 2 banks and many fine private residences. [1]
