Milton Massachusetts claimed the #2 spot on CNN Money Magazine's 2011 Best Places to Live, a list of America's Best Small Towns.

Milton was incorporated from a part of the Town of Dorchester in 1662. For 200 years the town's fortunes were derived from both agrarian farms and industrial activity along the Neponset River. Milton's grist mill, paper mill, gunpowder mill and chocolate factory are considered to have been among the first of their kind in New England. After the Civil War, population boomed, in large part due to the Milton and Dorchester branch of the Old Colony Railroad which provided easy access to the City of Boston. A horse-powered streetcar was established from the Lower Mills to downtown Boston via Dorchester Avenue in 1856. Thus began Milton's evolution to a bedroom community serving commuters who work in the city. [1]
