Johnson Place was High Point's first suburban subdivision, built (what was then) far out in the country in 1907. (Streetcar Suburb) A portion of Johnson Place (900-1200 blocks of Johnson Street) was designated a local historic district by the City in 1986. (See Johnson Street Historic District)

R. Homer Wheeler and L. E. Johnson were principals and developers through their Home Investment and Improvement Company. A ca. 1907 sales brochure noted amenities including: "Close-in, Broad Streets, Careful Restrictions, Local Electric Car Line Tracks, Interurban tracks to Greensboro, City Water, Sewerage, Electric Lights, Sidewalks, Shade Trees and every modern improvement and convenience." The brochure also notes "In the right end of the city, the North, and in line with all the important new developments. (The South side of the city was known for its factories, noise and smoke.)
