TOWNS

The Antelope County Courthouse is located at 501 Main Street, Neligh, NE 68756; phone: 402-887-4252.

The county was named by Nebraska State Senator Leander Gerrard [1837-1913] in commemoration of his killing an antelope while chasing Indians in this region.

When Antelope County was organized, the small settlement of Oakdale in the southeastern part of the county was selected as county seat. In 1873, Neligh was founded in a more central location, and efforts began to move the county seat there. After a bitter struggle Neligh won out and the county offices were moved there in 1883. [†]
