Wolfeboro was first settle about 1768 and was incorporated in 1770. It is named for General Wolfe who was a hero of the Battle of Quebec. Governor John Wentworth built a mansion on Lake Wentworth (then known as Smith Pond) and thus, Wolfeboro lays claim to the tile of "oldest summer resort in America."
