Originally names Normanskill, the name was changed to Slingerlands in 1870. The post office was established in 1852 by W. H. Slingerland, who served as postmaster for many years. The Albany and Susquehanna Railroad ran through Slingerlands. Albert I Slingerland owned a large amount of real estate, built a Methodist church, and many of the dwellings in the village. Besides the church and residences, in 1897 Slingerlands contained a hotel (Home Lawn Hotel), several stores, a saw mill and a cider mill. [1]
