In 1880 North Java had 160 inhabitants, 2 general stores, a hardware store, 2 churches, a hotel, 3 blacksmiths, 2 wagon shops, 2 millinery and dressmaking shops, a patent medicine establishment, 1 harness shop, 2 shoe shops, a photographic gallery, and 2 resident physicians. Among the first settlers at this site were Rufus Jewell, Stephen Carson, and Levi Mann, who located here about 1816-1820. The first store was opened in 1832 by Ormus Doolittle and David McWehy as proprietors. Elijah Bassett opened the first shoe shop about 1820, and Abraham Fancher the first blacksmith shop about 1830.
