Neighborhoods
Grafton [†] is a village along the East Branch of the Black River. It was platted in 1846 when the railroad extended to the area and may be named after Grafton, Massachusetts. It covers 4.74 square miles, with 4.71 square miles of land and 0.03 square miles of water.
Historically, Grafton was called Rawsonville until its incorporation in 1877. Sandstone quarrying, discovered in 1849, was a major industry until cement use grew in the 1920s. A foundry later became a key employer until the late 1990s. Today, small manufacturers operate in the north commercial district. The village is also home to the Lorain Correctional Institution and other nearby prisons.
Grafton's infrastructure includes a municipally owned electric system, Grafton Power and Light, part of American Municipal Power, and a water system supplied by the Rural Lorain County Water Authority. The village has parks like North Park, Willow Park, and Reservoir Park, and is served by the Midview Local School District. Major highways (OH-57, OH-83) and proximity to Interstates 80 and 480 provide connectivity, with Cleveland-Hopkins Airport 18 minutes away.
