Chatwood straddles West Chester Pike (Route 3) just east of the boro line. It's comprised of detached single family and twin residences. Interior living space ranges from less than 1,000 to more than 2,000 sqft. with a median of approximately 1,400 sqft. Lot sizes vary with twins being generally less than one-fifth of an acre, and detached singles ranging from less than one-fifth of an acre through more than one acre.

Exact boundaries of what today is considered Chatwood are variable depending on who observes. We do know something about the origins of the name and residential construction from Edward Pinkowski's Chester County Place Names, 1962. Text below is an excerpt from that source.

"Johnston Wilson, whose grandparents moved from Parkesburg to Pittsburgh in a Conestoga Wagon in 1829, returned to Chester County in 1904 and bought the old Pyle farm about a mile northeast of West Chester in West Goshen Township. He farmed the land until 1912 when he subdivided it into 65 building lots and started to build houses. One day he halted near a large pile of wood, where two streets and several building lines were staked out, when one of his neighbors asked him what he was going to call his development. 'I don't know', he replied. 'Why don't you call it Chatwood from the name of the Pyle homestead?' The more homes he erected, the more Wilson admired the name his neighbor had suggested. Thus the new section became Chatwood."
