When it was established as the county seat ca. 1820, the town was known as Tellico . The name was changed in 1830 in honor of a local politician, James Madison Greenway.
One of Madisonville's most noted natives was Estes Kefauver [1903-1963]. Kefauver served as a U. S. Congressman from 1939 to 1949 and as a Senator from 1948-1963.
