Originally named Liberty, Maynardville, seat of Union County, was named for Horace Maynard, U.S. Congressman from 1857 to 1863 and 1866 to 1875. During the early part of the War Between the States, sentiment in East Tennessee—where plantations were few—was strong for peace and for remaining in the Union. Maynard interviewed President Lincoln soon after his inauguration and was reassured by the latter's statement that the North did not want to fight. At this time many Southerners had been disturbed by Lincoln's inaugural address, so Maynard carried home the message the President had given him. [1]
