The area that would become Watertown [1] was first settled about 1780 when North Carolina's Captain William Thompson built a safe-haven fort for travelers along the Holstein Trail. The town itself was founded by William L. Waters about 1844 when he and his wife built a log cabin here. Waters established the early businesses: a saw mill, grist mill and blacksmith shop. A post office was established about 1858. Economic fortunes of the town surged with the coming of the Knoxville Railroad in 1885.
