Established around 1855, Elmendorf was incorporated as a city in 1963. The first post office came to Elmendorf in 1890. It was named for Henry Elmendorf, its founder, who served as mayor of San Antonio from 1894-1897. Elmendorf exerted considerable influence in routing the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway (which went from San Antonio to the Gulf) through Elmendorf.
