Organized in1885,ValVerde (Spanish forgreen valley) was named after theCivil Warbattle ofValVerde. Thecounty islocated next to theRioGrande insouthwest Texas andcovers a large area ofover 3,000 miles—sixth inTexas inarea—although in1973 thecounty population was less than 30,000. This large area supports numerous sheep, goat and cattle ranches.
