Beginnings [1]
The City Pelham enjoys a central location in the state and is a major suburb in the Birmingham metropolitan area. It is located in northwestern Shelby County approximately 15 miles south of downtown Birmingham along U.S. Highway 31 and Interstate 65. Neighboring municipalities include Alabaster, Chelsea, Helena, Hoover and Indian Springs Village. The City of Pelham was officially incorporated on July 10, 1964.
The City of Pelham is located in the foothills of the beautiful Appalachian Mountains. Pelham's topography is generally characterized by a series of lush, green mountains and parallel valleys that run in a northeastern to southwestern direction within the ridge and valley physiographic province of the southern Appalachian system. The mountains of Pelham include New Hope Mountain, Little Oak Ridge and Double Oak Mountain.
