Arkadelphia began as a small river settlement on the Ouachita River in the early 1800s, likely first settled around 1810–1812 by John Hemphill, who ran a salt works nearby. It was first known as Blakelytown, and the name Arkadelphia was adopted in 1839.
The city’s name is usually explained as combining “Ark-” from Arkansas with “-adelphia,” a Greek-rooted term meaning “brother” or “brother-place,” though the exact origin is not completely certain. Arkadelphia became the Clark County seat in 1842, and the completion of a brick courthouse and jail in 1844 helped cement its role as the county’s government center.
Its early development was driven by its position as a farm market and trading hub along river and road routes, and later by railroads and education. Those influences helped shape Arkadelphia’s identity over time.
