Completely burned to the ground during the Civil War, Jasper (Newton County seat of government) was rebuilt during the last two decades of the 19th century. The town may have been named for William Jasper, a Revolutionary era patriot and sergeant in the Colonial army.

The Jasper area has an indigenous bluish-gray limestone unknown outside of Newton County. It has been used in construction of a number of the city's buildings.
