First named Coldwater, the area that would become Avondale was first settled by William G. Moore in 1880. Moore built a saloon, general store and a stagecoach stop; he served as postmaster from 1901-1905. [Avondale Library, az-acondalelibrary.civicplus.com, accessed March, 2015.
Avondale was incorporated in 1946. Beginning in the 1980s, Avondale transformed from a farming community to a bedroom suburb for Phoenix.
