The city was established in 1965 from a plan pioneered by Donald Bren, Philip J. Reilly, and James Toepfer who purchased 10,000 acres from the family descendants of Richard O'Neill. O'Neill, a cattleman, obtained title to Rancho El Trabuco and Rancho Mission Viejo in 1907.
