Tavares was founded in 1880 by Major St. Claire Abrams, a speculator who had dreams of the city becoming the State Capitol of Florida. When Lake County was created in 1887, Tavares was made the county seat. Downtown Tavares lies along the shore of Lake Dora and is home to the scenic Dora Canal.
