First settled in 1861 as Westwood (for local pony express rider Wesley Wood), Rathdrum was the Kootenai County Seat from 1881 until 1908 when voters who wanted it moved to Coeur d'Alene prevailed. The name was changed to Rathdrum from Westwood in the 1800s. The name commemorates Rathdroma, Ireland, the birthplace of a local businessman.
