In 1852 Byron Lawrence stopped off in Brazil on his way west from Pennsylvania. He discovered coal and established the first coal mine. The city was established in 1866 and named for the South American country. Schools were established beginning in 1870. By 1900 population had grown to more than 11,000. By 1920 the National Road had been paved to Terre Haute. In 1876 it replaced Bowling Green as the county seat.
