TOWNS

Osage County, originally organized as Weller County in 1855, was renamed in 1859 after the Osage Nation, whose river drains much of the area. The county’s early years were shaped by its position along the Santa Fe Trail, fostering trade and settlement. Established within the Kansas Territory, it became part of the state when Kansas joined the Union in 1861. The county seat, Lyndon, emerged after a contentious struggle with rival towns like Burlingame, solidified by a Kansas Supreme Court ruling in 1875 and the construction of the current courthouse in 1923, a Classical Revival building listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
