Beginnings [1]

First settled in 1638 by Edward Batemen and John Brown, who purchased the land of Robin Hood, the Indian Chief. Settlement was broken up in the second Indian War. Resettled in 1734, Precinct of Georgetown until incorporated October 20, 1759. Plantation name, Nequasset. Present name from Woolwich, England. Day’s Ferry area designated as a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.
