Zimmerman [†], located in Sherburne County, Minnesota, is a small city with a rich history tied to its rural roots and natural surroundings. Originally known as the Village of Lake Fremont, it was incorporated in 1910. The name Lake Fremont honors John C. Frˇmont, a prominent western explorer. In 1967, the village was officially renamed the City of Zimmerman after Moses Zimmerman, a local farmer who played a pivotal role in advocating for the Great Northern Railway to pass through the area, spurring early development. The railwayÕs arrival on November 24, 1886, connected the area to Minneapolis, Elk River, Princeton, Hinckley, and Duluth, fostering growth.
The community began to take shape in the late 19th century. The J.F. Bean family, early settlers from New Hampshire, arrived in 1856, with Betsy Harvey Bean becoming Sherburne CountyÕs first schoolteacher. By the 1890s, the area saw the establishment of a cooperative creamery in 1898, a key economic driver, and the village was platted in 1904 around the creamery site. Main Street, also called Fremont Avenue, became the commercial hub, with businesses like the Graham Store, a blacksmith shop, and later a general merchandise store, the Blanchett Hotel, a livery, lumberyard, bowling alley, liquor store, hardware store, cafˇ, and barbershop. The post office, initially housed in the English-Thomas store, moved several times and was managed by Ina Bean from 1908, solidifying ZimmermanÕs identity despite the dual naming of Lake Fremont and Zimmerman on maps.
