John Wilson, a native of Maine, came to settle here in the 1850s. Wilson was of French ancestry and had an interest in Napoleon Bonaparte. He named the place after the Paris suburb, Saint-Cloud, where Napoleon maintained a palace. St. Could was incorporated as a city in 1856, uniting the former settlements known as Upper Town, Middle Town and Lower Town.
