When Lewis County was formed in January of 1883, a committee was appointed to select a location for a county seat. The members were William Blakey, William F. Foreman and Joshua Feazel. By September they had selected the location and named it "Monticello" meaning "Little Mountain." The town is situated on a hill, as was Thomas Jefferson's home, also Monticello, for which it was named.
